Details:
Dr. Bieniasz is one of the leading virologists in the United States. His did his Ph.D. work with Myra McClure at St. Mary’s in London studying foamy virus replication and post-doctoral work with Bryan Cullen at Duke studying HIV entry and the molecular regulation of HIV transcription. In 1999 he started his lab at the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center (affiliated with Rockefeller University) in New York City where he worked for 20 years prior to transitioning to Rockefeller proper in 2019. He has been an HHMI investigator since 2008. Over his career, Dr. Bieniasz’s lab has made myriad major contributions to our understanding of HIV replication, the host antiviral immune response, HIV animal models, and evolution of retroviruses including the discovery of TSG101 as a HIV-1 host factor, the first real-time visualization of HIV-1 budding and genome packaging, the discovery of the host antiviral restriction factor Tetherin, the identification of Mx2 as a host restriction factor blocking HIV entry, and elucidation of the mechanism by which HIV circumvents Zinc Finger Antiviral Protein, and antiviral factor that restricts RNA virus gene expression.
