Neuroscience Seminar: Amar Sahay
October 16, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
The Department of Neuroscience will host a seminar with guest speaker Dr. Amar Sahay, Principal Faculty at Harvard Stem Cell Institute, Harvard Medical School & Massachusetts General Hospital, on October 16th, 2019, in 3571 WIMR II at 12:00 PM (noon).
Dr. Sahay is an associate professor at the Center for Regenerative Medicine and the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He is also principal faculty of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute of Harvard University.
The mission of the Sahay Lab is to generate fundamental insights into the role of adult hippocampal neurogenesis, the process by which neural stem cells generate dentate granule neurons throughout life, in hippocampal functions in encoding, memory processing and modulation of mood. The incidence and complexity of mental illnesses and cognitive impairments associated with ageing and Alzheimer’s disease underscores the need to develop novel treatments.
By integrating cellular, circuit, systems and behavioral interrogation of adult hippocampal neurogenesis, they aspire to rejuvenate and re-engineer hippocampal circuitry to optimize circuit performance in diseases such as depression, anxiety disorders, Alzheimer’s disease and ageing.
To address this goal, they have established a multifaceted research program that integrates inducible mouse- and viral-genetics, pharmaco- and optogenetics, synaptic tracing, in vivo awake behaving optical imaging, 2 photon imaging, human cellular reprogramming, and behavioral analysis.
