Join our career discussion with Karen Staehling, Manager of External Engagement at Stowers Institute for Medical Research.
Dr. Karen Staehling is a scientist and educator. She graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in biology and chemistry from William Jewell College and earned a Ph.D. in cellular and molecular biology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, she worked in the biotechnology industry as a Genomics Scientist at Celltech R&D, Inc in the Seattle area.
Karen was recruited to the Stowers Institute for Medical Research in Kansas City in 2005 to lead the Molecular Biology Department where she oversaw a team of 16 scientists that provided technical services in the areas of DNA sequencing, genome engineering, and automation. Dr. Staehling stayed in that position until 2019 when she transitioned into her current role as Manager of External Engagement where she leads the Institute’s outreach efforts. Her current role complements her adjunct faculty position at the Kansas City Art Institute where she has developed and taught science courses for the past 3 years.
