Provided that they make satisfactory progress towards their PhD, all CMB students are guaranteed a competitive stipend and tuition remission for the duration of their graduate studies, but applying for outside funding opportunities is always encouraged. In addition to the funding opportunities listed below, we encourage you to also check for department-specific training grants or fellowships, and ask your faculty advisor for suggestions based on the type of research you are doing. A list of CMB students who have recently received fellowships and training grants can be found on the Student Honors page. Current students also have access to the Student Resources Box folder, which contains fellowship and training grant application examples from other CMB students.

SMART Scholarship Program

Biology of Aging and Age-Related Diseases Training Grant
To prepare students to conduct research in the basic biology of aging
Eligibility: U.S. Citizens or permanent resident. Must be students in UW Madison departments in which there are faculty mentors on the training grant or who meet the necessary criteria to become mentors.
Biotechnology Training Program
An opportunity for doctoral students to obtain training in biotechnology

CMB Travel Awards
CMB students are eligible to receive a travel award from the CMB Program of up to $500 every other year. Travel award announcements are sent out by the CMB Office in early fall and spring.
