RESEARCH DESCRIPTION:
Metabolic diseases have risen to become a major cause of death throughout the world. These diseases are the outcome of gene-by-environment interactions where the environment influences the penetrance of genetic variants. We use forward-genetics as a pipeline to discover genes involved in metabolic diseases. Our major focus is on diabetes and lipid disorders. We do forward genetic screens and ascertaom phenotypes from the physiological to the molecular level, spanning clinical traits, metabolomics, lipidomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics. We identify genes that control these traits. We then do mechanistic, cell-based experiments to understand how these genes affect disease susceptibility.
