RESEARCH DESCRIPTION:

Dr. Ayuso’s research focuses on how microenvironmental aspects in the tissue microenvironment affect cell behavior. Specific examples include studying how changes in nutrient and oxygen availability affect immune cell response inside solid tumors. The lab uses a combination of cellular and molecular biology supported by microfluidic models (also known as organ-on-a-chip or microphysiological systems) to model spatial and temporal changes across the tissue microenvironment. This approach allows our lab to identify therapeutic targets that we can engineer to metabolically armor immune cells to survive inside the tumor microenvironment. Other projects focus on related topics like how changes in oxygen and nutrients affect immune-related processes such as pathogen defense or wound healing.
